NORMAN, Okla. – Guests at a hotel in Norman got a big scare on Wednesday night as a tornado touched down near their rooms.

The damage was pretty significant at the Norman Hotel off of I-35 near Robinson.

The tornado ripped off several big chunks of a wall.

The hotel’s general manager, Penny Martin, got a call from her front desk clerk minutes before impact.

“They just made sure all the guests were safe and [that] they were safe,” Martin said.

Everyone rode out the storm in this hallway in the center of the hotel.

Paris Gomez-Alcanla and her family still hadn’t made it there yet.

“We were on our way to Dodge City, Kansas,” she said.

They were still in their SUV on their way home from Mexico.

Paris says they had no idea they were in danger, until it was almost too late.

“I’m thinking I’m going to die,” she said. “I don’t want to die on the road.”

After several stops and close calls the family decided to pull over and get a room at the Norman Hotel.

They won’t forget this road trip anytime soon.
